You are the light

This marks the first portrait I have painted since high school, a solid 27 years ago. It felt prudent not to subject anyone but myself to my first attempt back into the world of portraiture. The topic also led me to decide on a self-portrait. Such a bold statement requires me to demonstrate its possibility, and the most direct way I could imagine doing so was by embodying the pose myself.

In a way, painting this self-portrait has made me consider the value of the self.  What if each one of us is the light? What if every thought you have, every word you say, and the way that you weave your life through your actions is of vital importance to this Universe and to all who surround you?  What if we are peace, light, joy, and love, and have just forgotten to notice it?

I find that my day is either made or shattered in my innermost thoughts. Often, what drives these conversations is my sense of self-worth. I often measure my value by whether or not others see, love, appreciate, or value me and my work. However, this drive to seek external validation can, if not approached mindfully, lead to feelings of fear, isolation, and resentment. The direction of which is established in each one of our inner conversations.

Maybe if we step out every morning with the bold assumption of “I am the light,” our inner conversations, thoughts, feelings, and actions will follow. From here, who knows – love, joy, maybe even peace…
