I was inspired by the Valley of Desolation near Graaff-Reinet in the Great Karoo at sunset. Having seen the beauty of this magical, millions-of-years-old landscape, I had to express my awe in an oil painting. I was especially drawn to how, as the yellow sun fades, it still catches and reveals the rock shapes of these very high and deep mountains. The purple shadows slowly take over as night descends.
